\nGeiger counter part is powered by a regular CR2032 3V battery which lasts about a year ( I was able to confirm this), while quartz clock is powered by another (smaller batter) which lasts much longer.<\/p>\n
I’m not going to bore you with all the specs, you can find out more on the official site<\/a>.<\/p>\n As I mentioned it’s made by Polimaster, which is a company in former Russian republic of Belarus. They specialize at radiation detection equipment and they seem to be a world leader from what I’ve seen. They do make awesome stuff (recently they released a Geiger counter for iPhone), however I didn’t have any luck contacting them when my watch finally broke down (more on this later), they simply ignored all my e-mails…<\/p>\n I’m not sure if this same model is till being made, but there’s a new one that was released a while back : PM1208m.\u00a0 This newer watch looks a lot cooler that the one I’m writing about, and seems a lot less bulky too. However you will no longer be able to buy new or old one for the $400 that I payed because of the “Fukushima” incident. I’ve seen this watch sells online for around $700-$800…<\/p>\n I was immediately amazed by how sensitive it was. Watch would display background radiation at constantly changing rate. It was usually higher during day, and lower during night. I’ve encountered few places where gamma would be slightly higher that in other places for no apparent reason.<\/p>\n At one point I had pain chest and my doctor sent me to cardiologic clinic for a checkup (don’t worry, everything was fine). They did what’s called a Radionuclide Scan.\u00a0 It’s a procedure when they put tiny amount of radioactive isotope in your blood stream and monitor it’s flow to see if anything is obstructed.\u00a0 Even tho radiation level was supposed to be almost negligible, I was “glowing” to my gamma watch. In fact I couldn’t wear it for about a week, it would start beeping every time I came close to the watch.<\/p>\n LCD Display on the clocks has a very unusual bluish tint. This is actually typical of Russian made liquid crystals.\u00a0 Otherwise it’s same exact in any other digital wrist watch.<\/p>\n Clock part of the wristwatch left me with mixed feeling. Swiss made quartz clock mechanism was very precise, but I can’t say same about digital clock part. I had to adjust it monthly as it would gain or loose few minutes…<\/p>\n To be honest, novelty part of having gamma counter on your wrist wore off in about a year. At that point I switched to lighter wrist watch and left PM1208 in the drawer most of the times. I still did wore it occasionally.<\/p>\n Unfortunately after about 3 years later my PM1208 stopped detecting any radiation.\u00a0 Watch part still worked and showed time, but neither replacing batteries or resetting “CPU” did anything to bring gamma detector back to life. It worked for about 6 to 12 months after which time it stopped once again. This time no matter what I tried I couldn’t bring it back to life.\u00a0 I’m not sure exactly what happened, perhaps GM tube’s life was up, or high voltage circuit gave out, but at that time I had no measurement tools and sufficient electronics knowledge to figure it out.<\/p>\n I’ve tried contacting Polimaster and was willing to pay for repair but to my disappointment they ignored every single e-mail I sent.<\/p>\n Taking watch apart wasn’t too hard. Previously I never attempted to take PCB completely out, as I was afraid to damage delicate components. And indeed it does look delicate inside. However after watch broke down for the second time I decided I had nothing to loose and took it apart.<\/p>\n After unscrewing back (with universal watch opener tool<\/a>) and removing battery holder clips I had to remove several tiny screws and PCB came out pretty easily.<\/p>\n Below are the macro picture I took this morning (click on image to download full res).<\/p>\n Immediately identifiable is the GM tube. It’s largest part in the watch, and yet it’s tiny compared to other tubes like famous Russian SBM-20<\/a>. I still don’t know how the heck it can be so sensitive in such small size!\u00a0 If anyone knows please enlighten me.\u00a0GM Tube’s model name\/number is mystery to me. It has a small label attached to it which has “GL110” written on it in Cyrillic letters.\u00a0 Google search did not return any meaningful results for “GL110″… <\/span>Tube is actually SBM-21!<\/p>\n Here are rest of the pictures<\/p>\n There’s no denying that Gamma Watch is one of the coolest gadgets, at least to me. I’m still fascinated by it. To this day I don’t know of any other similar product on the market, which surprises me.\u00a0 Is it really so hard to make wrist size gamma detector?\u00a0 Certainty nobody can say these days that there’s no demand for gamma counters, not after Fukushima disaster. All Geiger counter related equipment is either completely out of stock or price of it went thru the roof.\u00a0 As an example I was looking for\u00a0XP3312 photomultiplier (PMT) on eBay (it’s device used in very sensitive scintillation based<\/a> gamma detectors). There are 2 or 3 available, nothing is cheaper than $200. These same PMTs were just $15 in 2011!\u00a0 That’s 1,233% increase!!! \nWatch lay forgotten in the drawer for another 2 years. After 2 years, for some reason I decided to give another try and opened watch again trying to find a problem.
